Hiya,

Does anyone know of anyone making bio-diesel in Leith?

I would really like to set up a bio-diesel project, converting used chip oil (or even new vegetable oil) into diesel. I have found a couple of reasonably priced kits for getting started but don't currently have anywhere to put it.

It is now legal to produce a certain amount of bio-diesel per year for personal use. Set up costs are around £2-300 and the end product (which can be used in most diesel vehicles) can be made for around 10p/litre (if oil is free) or 90p/litre (if buying new vegetable oil).

Anyone interested in doing this?

Anyone with a garage, shed or similar that could be used?

Hi Dom,

I'm afraid Greener Leith doesn't have any premises of our own, so we can't help. Good luck in trying to find somewhere!
Hi Dom,
I have been thinking on the same lines for a while, but don't have anywhere either. There is one place where they are already producing it, the Citroen garage in Arthur Street. Here Kenny makes it for his own consumption, so to speak, but he was saying that it was already getting a bit difficult to find used vegetable oil as all the chippies use animal based oils apparently. My other thought was to try and get a school interested as part of their chemistry classes. Sadly don't have the time to investigate this further, but please keep us abreast of any developments. Interesting, I didn't know you could not use animal oil to make bio diesel... I have heard it is getting harder to come by used oil as lots of Edinburgh chippies have some recycling system. Anyway, even if it is made with bulk bought new veg oil it has got to be more sustainable (and cheaper) than normal diesel.
