Police in the City of Edinburgh are starting a campaign of cycle registering, marking and possible tagging. Why is this beneficial?
Currently police check if cycles have been reported stolen on the crime reporting system, unlike a vehicle where the police can check a computer system to find out details, police cannot check many cycles against bikeregister.com as people have not yet registered.
If you go to directly to the bikeregister.com it will cost you £5.95 to register, police will charge you £5.00 to register and property mark it with a unique code on the frame and other parts of the cycle.
For £16.00, the police will register the cycle, property mark it and supply you with a kit to ‘tag’ the frame. The tag is a Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID), which can be read by a scanner and each tag is unique.
At some events that the police will advertise and attend this year, some cycles will be registered and marked free of charge. If you get this opportunity, why not spend an extra £11.00 and tag your cycle?
The more cycles that are registered, marked and tagged, then there are increased opportunities for the police to trace the owner.
