Due to road works we recently had a couple of traffic-free weeks down at the shore. Wow. How amazing was that. It felt so peaceful and calm and you could actually hear the birds on and around the water. It felt like this is how it is meant to be. Now the road works are gone and the traffic hell is back. A massive articulated lorry thundered along the Shore at 6.30 this morning and that is just the start of it. Pretty soon it will be back to a non-stop stream of noisy traffic. Roll on September…

Let's go out is an outdoor do it yourself playgroup based in parks and other natural spaces. It comes from an idea in Glasgow where I participated in a group called Nurture in Nature (organised by Lusi Alderslowe) with my wee girl. We went to lovely parks, always public transport accessible, dog friendly and any weather. I started going in the snow with the hard core of other crazy folk but on warmer days it's a bit easier to stay out for much longer. The idea is to be child…

Family on a Bike are Kirstie Pelling and Stuart Wickes who are writers and parents of three young children who haven't let either career or kids get in the way of traveling the world by bicycle. At times they have ridden with as two bikes with a tag-a-long each, connected to trailers with equipment, tents, foods, nappies and more. And then they got pregnant again. Worth checking out for anyone hoping to travel by bicycle with kids, what they haven't done, you'll likely never think…

New here so not fully up to date with all activities of GL. Is there a food group already? If not, would anyone be interested in forming one to promote local food. We had a transition group where I lived before and we held some really interesting evening events with local chefs using local food and, at the same time, promoting the aims of the group.

So how do you get people out of their cars onto more meaner, leaner and greener forms of transport?
For me, behaviour change came with a mighty crunch, when I ran my little and apparently tinfoil clad car into the back of a far sturdier vehicle.
Although I heartily don't recommend this as an effective means of getting rid of your car, a lack of other affordable options and the insurance money enabled me to toddle up to one of the…

Last Thursday saw the passing of the 2000 mile mark since I started cycling to work in April. It would have been good to have been out on a nice ride but the event passed quietly somewhere along the North Edinburgh Cycle Path on the way to the office.
Instead, I clocked up a few extra miles on Saturday morning, having dragged Maddie and Alice reluctantly out of the house on the promise of breakfast at McDonald's. We headed off along my usual work route, Maddie on the tag-along and…

It’s arrived! Monday 3 August marked an important day on every planner's calendar. Yes, it was a public holiday, but more importantly it was the day when new arrangements come into place for dealing with planning applications and appeals, and giving communities a greater say. The day may have passed, but planning reform is here to stay.
In response, Planning Aid for Scotland, a national charity providing training and free advice on planning and environmental matters through a network…

hello,
I'm not sure how much (if anything) anyone can do about the dog mess in the Links. On a recent trip with my two year old he stood in it twice. The whole park appears to be full of it.
I'll contact the council and if there's any pressure anyone can bring to bear it would be much appreciated.
thank you
