New here so not fully up to date with all activities of GL. Is there a food group already? If not, would anyone be interested in forming one to promote local food. We had a transition group where I lived before and we held some really interesting evening events with local chefs using local food and, at the same time, promoting the aims of the group.

Hi,
My name's Rosie and I am working at the Drill Hall on their Carbon reduction project, and one of the things we are wanting to do is to help people move towards local, seasonal, non-processed food. I would love to join the food group in this capcacity, and also on a personal basis.

If it would help we could maybe provide free meeting space here? I would love to be at the first meeting wherever it happens, so please let me know where/when.

I am sure you've all seen the Kitchen Canny stuff - this is a 4 week activity programme to reduce food waste and would be a great focus for a couple of meetings. Would anyone be interested in trying this out? Lots of recipe and food tip swapping!

Anyway have a good Friday everyone!

Thanks,

Rosie

Hello Fay - I am waiting for a meeting to be set up with Gerri and hope you would be interested in coming to that. Also would be interested to help with anything going on regarding World Kitchen so look forward to hearing from you about that. Regards. Linda

Hello Linda and Gerri
hope you don't mind me joining in the discussion – I am Fay, from Leith Open Space and very interested in food (specially local, healthy and affordable food for home cooking). I am involved in a voluntary group called World Kitchen in Leith, we launched with a stall during Leith Festival last year and hope to organise more events this year. one of the key members is out of the country at the moment but will be back at the
end of February. Maybe we could meet up then to explore potential for some kind of collaboration?

Hi Gerri - Thanks of your message. Yes I would definitely be interested in coming along to a meeting. Just up my street so let me know where and when. My phone number is 0131 555 1071 and I think I may live near you anyway - Ryehill Grove? Regards and see you soon. Linda (Rodgers)

Hi Linda, I have foot in both camps so to speak as my day job is with Transition Scotland Support so am very familiar with the working group model. I would be happy to be part of a food group. Greener Leith has also been asked to get involved with an initiative called the 'Forth Diet'. Pete Richie of Whitmuir Organics and One Planet Food is putting in a bid to the Climate Challenge Fund to fund a local consortium (which we would be part of) - this will build on the learning from the Fife diet. Slow Food edinburgh are also involved. Donald Read who is the current chair edits the food section of 'The List' so has a lot of connections to the local, seasonal food economy. Would you be up for a meeting with you, me Ally and whoever else is interested in local food? I'd be happy to host it at mine (I'm in the Lochend Colonies just across from Ally).

Hi Linda,

GL doesn't have an official "food group," as our volunteers tend to muck in wherever they can. However, if you'd like to help us set something up we'd love to work with you to do it. We have organised 'food themed' evening events in the past - we even held a local food summit in early 2009 to try to figure out what could be done locally.

You can see the results of that here:

Since then, we've tried to work on some of the priorities that this meeting identified, with varying degrees of success it must be said! Currently, we're looking to hire a local 'community garden development worker' and we're also trying to fundraise to plant a 'childrens orchard' in Leith Links.

If you'd like to find out more about volunteering with Greener Leith - do get in touch. You can do that either through this site, or using this form: http://www.greenerleith.org/contact-greener-leith/

Last, but not least, there is a food group on this site too - and I think it could do with some extra members!
